The Old Rectory is a careful renovation and extension of a historic 1863 property in East Barkwith, Lincolnshire, winning both the 2026 RIBA East Midlands Award and Small Project of the Year Award.
Delivered in collaboration with Brisco Loran, the project demonstrates how thoughtful intervention can extend the life of historic buildings without compromising their character.
The project carefully adapts the existing building for modern family living while preserving its character and rural context. A new single-storey pitched roof extension has been introduced as a quiet, complementary addition to the original house.
Our structural approach focused on sensitivity and buildability, responding to challenging ground conditions and mature trees on site. The extension uses timber stud construction with brick cladding, designed to work harmoniously with the existing material palette while minimising the embodied carbon as much as possible.
Internally, the layout was reconfigured to improve flow and functionality, with carefully considered interventions-including a new chimney and timber canopy - helping to unify old and new.
