Tate Institute

Retrofit of former workers accommodation

We are providing structural engineering for the retrofit of the Tate Institute, a locally listed community building in Silvertown, originally built in 1887 by Sir Henry Tate for workers of the nearby sugar factory. The project aims to bring the long-derelict structure back into use as a net zero carbon, community-led space.

Our approach focuses on retaining and reusing the existing structural fabric wherever possible. We’ve developed strategies to repair or augment timber elements affected by decay, and to support improved thermal performance through careful structural detailing. Interventions include a new lift, a large glazed skylight, and reconfigured internal framing to enhance circulation.

The project embraces circular economy principles, with reclaimed materials sourced both from within the building and via local supply partnerships. From the structural frame to architectural finishes, the retrofit champions low-carbon design and community reuse, supporting the long-term sustainability and adaptability of this important local landmark.
