Padnall Hall

Designed by RCKa Architects for Be First and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Padnall hall has been revitalised from a long-unused building into a vibrant space for learning, creativity and social activity, carefully refurbishing and adapting the existing structure to create flexible spaces for young people.

Simple Works provided structural engineering services to support the refurbishment and reconfiguration of the building. Our work included assessing the existing structure and designing alterations to accommodate the new layout, including the removal of internal walls and the formation of new and enlarged openings.

We also reviewed the structure to support the proposed recladding strategy and designed a new entrance canopy to create a clearer and more welcoming arrival. Civil engineering input supported site drainage and external works, helping integrate the renewed building with the surrounding public realm.

Co-design with local young people shaped the layout, programme, and sustainability targets, while providing skills, work experience, and opportunities for engagement with the built environment. The project delivers social value, wellbeing, and creative spaces for one of London’s most deprived communities.
