Halcyon School Wellbeing Garden

A rooftop retreat where nature meets learning

Perched atop a central London building, the Halcyon School Wellbeing Garden transforms an under‑used rooftop into a biodiverse, flexible outdoor space for wellbeing and learning. Developed in collaboration with NOOMA Studio, Halcyon London International School and Mitre and Monday, the garden supports teaching, play, social interaction, and everyday engagement with nature within a dense urban context.

The scheme blends heritage sensitivity with contemporary interventions -creating a calm, inspiring environment that enriches the school experience and enhances the building’s usability.

Working within the constraints of a 1930s building, we provided the structural engineering for the rooftop garden, analysing the existing structure for the planter loads and designing and assessing the concrete ballast required to stabilise the perimeter frame without overloading the existing structure.

The Halcyon School Wellbeing Garden now offers flexible outdoor classrooms, seating terraces, and biodiverse planting, showing how thoughtful engineering can transform a constrained urban rooftop into a space for wellbeing and learning.
