Designed by Turner Works for General Projects, Camberwell Quarter transforms the former Burgess Business Park in Camberwell - once home to the Sunpat peanut butter factory - through the refurbishment and expansion of its historic industrial estate. The project retains and upgrades approximately 10,000 m² of existing industrial space while introducing 2,000 m² of carefully integrated new-build space to support the site's continued commercial use.
Simple Works were appointed as structural engineers to assess the existing buildings and develop a pragmatic upgrade strategy. We carried out a comprehensive visual inspection to provide the client with a full Defects Summary of the existing structure, identifying all defects to the primary structural elements so that the structure could be brought back to an acceptable condition during the refurbishment.
Our work focused on a detailed appraisal of the pitched roofs, analysing multiple truss typologies to identify optimised locations for PV panels that minimised strengthening works, reducing both cost and material use. We also incorporated alterations to the existing structure, forming new openings and supports for lifts, services, and proposed internal architecture. The scheme includes a new-build horizontal extension to the existing warehouses, alongside civil engineering design including below-ground drainage and site levels coordination.
