The BREW HOUSE pavilion was commissioned by Studio Egret West for Clerkenwell Design Week 2025 as a temporary installation exploring material innovation and circular construction. The project investigates how waste streams can be reintroduced into building materials through collaboration across design, engineering and manufacturing.
Developed with York Handmade Brick Company, the pavilion is constructed from over 600 Brew Bricks, an experimental masonry unit made using waste coffee grounds collected from cafés across London. The initiative began with a simple question: could an everyday waste product become a useful building material?
Around 300kg of coffee grounds were diverted from the waste stream and incorporated into the brick manufacturing process. The resulting bricks reduce clay consumption by approximately 10% and are around 5% lighter than standard clay bricks.
Simple Works worked with Studio Egret West to develop the structural design of the pavilion, demonstrating the Brew Brick system at full scale in a public setting.
